hiraki sawa was born in ishikawa, japan, in 1977. currently, he lives and works in london. the artist creates poetic, ephemeral dreamscapes that focus on making visible the realm of imagination. using toys, books and other household objects as props and backdrops, hiraki produces environments that, when projected onto large screens, take on a dreamlike quality. hiraki uses video and animation as mediums for language; he combines everyday images with dramatic ones to create a hyper, but still tangible dissociation.
in dwelling, sawa creates a dreamlike universe inside a nondescript apartment. dwelling follows the dramatic slow and solemn flight patterns of roaring miniaturized boeings, airbuses, concordes, jet planes, and commuter aircrafts as if documenting chaotic airport traffic. we become involved in the video unconsciously, and experience a world where you are not you, objects are not objects…
the black&white video begins with a single shot of the top-floor windows in a nondescript london apartment building, which could be just about anywhere in the world. the video takes place entirely in sawa’s london apartment. he took still shots of different areas of his apartment and superimposed upon them animated images of various toy airplanes taking off; cruising about the rooms; and landing on a table, floor, bathtub, refrigerator, and bed…
he mixes reality with dreams, creating a modern day alice in wonderland. he dissociates time and space and melts existence with destruction…
sawa also uses metaphors such as carpets to plants or the snow. reality and dreams are inextricably woven together…
the forrest is his final work of david scharf created at at augsburg – university of applied sciences, bavaria, germany in 2009.

the american film institute (AFI) just launched a new video portal on afi.com featuring hundreds of videos from its vast archives. the collection will be regularly augmented with videos selected from the AFI archive, which contains 10.000 hours of material produced during AFI’s 42 year history, much of which has never been seen by the general public. not to miss great clips such as “alfred hitchcock on mastering cinematic tension” or “steven spielberg: admires animators”

acum cateva zile, a murit fratele cel mare al tatei.“s-a mutat intr-o stea”, ar fi spus cu seninatate paler. un destin curmat tragic, la 59 de ani, in urma unui teribil accident de masina. a murit pe loc, “zdrobit pe carosabil de un microbuz, in plina noapte!”, avea sa relateze presa.
o formulare stereotipa, si unul dintre cele mai banale si, din pacate, foarte frecvente moduri, de a deschide o editie de stiri. o reteta de succes perversa, insa sa fim bine intelesi, nu este apanajul exclusiv al peisajului mediactic romanesc. o intalnim si-n occident, doar ca la noi atinge cote paroxice, fiind ingurgitata cu o voluptate bolnavicioasa de multi dintre noi. un refren strident, ce-ti urla zilnic in urechi: dimineata cand incerci sa-si turezi motoarele, cu o cana de cafea in mana, cu alta butonand buimac telecomada televizorului, avid dupa informatie ori seara, cand vrei sa te realaxezi. incetul cu incetul, incepi sa te inveti cu formula : “totul s-a intamplat in…” ori “tragedia s-a petrecut…” apoi, cu timpul intervine anumita acomodare si cu verbele tari: IZBIT, ZDROBIT, SFASIAT, SFARTECAT, SPULBERAT, desprinse parca, din vocabularul macelarului.
dar ce mai conteaza, ca jurnalele de stiri ale televiziunilor au devenit spectacole ale groazei, prin atentia acordata cu precadere infractiunilor violente si accidentelor rutiere; ca perversiunea, promiscuitatea, cinismul, crima sunt prezente zilnic, fie ca este vorba despre programele de stiri ori de divertisment, si tin loc de politica editoriala? s-au scris studii si articole pe marginea acestui subiect, s-au semnat petitii si s-au dat amenzi intr-o tardiva tentativa de recuperare a normalitatii.chiar si asa, dincolo de toate luarile de pozitie, mai mult sau mai putin formale, dincolo de comentarile docte ale specialistilor din media, sociologie si pshilogie, situatia a ramas la fel de grava: zilnic esti condamnat sa inghiti doza de otrava, cu care, intr-un final ajungi sa te obisnuiesti. sordidul s-a transformat intr-o conduita socialmente acceptabila, un rau cu care se poate trai, care macera sanatatea sufleteasca, mintala si sociala. consecinte sunt devastatoare, si cu atat mai grave cu cat, este vorba de un rau cumulativ.
in iuresul halucinant al existentei noastre, nimic nu dispare. totul ramane sedimnetat in noi. cele mai insignifiante gesturi, cele mai banale sau terifiante experiente, fiecare cuvant rosit ori nerostit, orice gand pasager, fiecare suspin ori zambet, fiecare atingere-i ca tatuata, fiecare privire-i (re)privita, fiecare tremur al pleoapelor iti vibreaza-n suflet, toate se astern in launtru, si stau acolo pitite, departe de vazul lumii, ca niste copii sfiosi, ascunsi in fusta mamei.
admit cu toata onestitatea de care ma simt capabila, ca adesea, ma las antrenata in jocul murdar practicat de televiziuni, si particip in mod constient la regresul afectiv, moral, intellectual, contemplandu-mi pasiv caderea. asa s-a intamplat si in dimineata sfintilor constantin si elena, cand, in slalomul facut in viteza, printre canalele de stiri, atentia mi-a fost captata de tipetele exasperante ale unor tiganci isterizate. primul reflex, a fost sa schimb canalul, oripilata de tambalau. n-am facut-o. sa fie nevoia de senzational, nevoia unui anume drog? m-am acomodat intr-atat de bine cu galagia si gargara mediatica? mi-am spus: ah, iar s-au incaierat niste interlopi buhaiti si lombrozieni, si-au luat sub asediu vreo mahala din bucuresti ori din craiova! de fapt, era un teribil accident de masina, undeva langa lugoj, cu o victima ramasa neindentificata. n-am avut nicio reactie sau cel putin, nu-mi amintesc sa ma fi emotionat in vreun fel, nu m-am simtit jenata nici de lipsa vreunei reactii, si-am schimbat canalul. peste cateva ore, am primit un telefon de la politie. de-acum, victima avea un nume, o mama, o familie, prieteni, trecut, destin.
in lipsa unor detalii concludente, s-au lansat o serie de ipoteze, care au fost inventariate de nenumarate ori, fara ca vreuna din ele sa reprezinte un raspuns definitiv ori macar satisfacator. in acelasi timp, ne gandeam la timpul pierdut sau petrecut impreuna, ori pur si simplu netrait, la satisfactii si dezamagiri. nu-mi amintesc de cate ori a sunat telefonul ori de cate ori, am sunat eu. printre numeroasele apeluri facute, unul dintre ele a fost catre numarul 112. aveam nevoie de numarul de telefon al politiei rutiere din lugoj.
intamplarea a facut ca, tot in aceea perioada sa am calculatorul stricat. nu aveam acces la internet, eram macinati de incertitudini, trebuia sa ne punem creierasul in ordine. asa ca, am luat telefonul si-am format 112. mi-a raspuns o voce vadit contrariata de solicitarea mea. “da’ de ce?”. i-am explicat intreaga situatie. intr-un final, pastrandu-si acelasi aer circumspect, mi-a spus ca-mi face legatura cu politia. a urmat apoi o intrebare halucinanta, la auzul careia am crezut ca-mi expandeaza creierul. “bine, va fac legatura. da’ in ce judet e lugojul?”, intreba “senina” dispecera.
i-am pasat telefonul mamei. in sfarsit ni se face legatura. la celalat capat al firului, raspunde o voce calda: buna ziua! urgentele. cu ce va putem ajuta? i-am explicat confuzia creata, si-am inchis. pentru noi, era prea tarziu pentru “urgenta”. nu-i nimic, se mai intampla, sa gresim, mi-am spus. am resunat la 112, si i-am spus, politicos despre eroarea intervenita. stupoare! dispecera, inovca nu stiu ce amendament, mai mult considera ca oricum, ne-a facut un serviciu, de care noi, n-am profitat, si ne-a inchis telefonul.
acum, stau si ma intreb: ce se intampla in cazul concret, in care, o presoana, victima a unui accident sau aflata intr-o situatie limita, panicata, confuza, suna la numarul salvator, si are bafta sa nimereasca peste o duduita d’asta, pusa acolo sa evalueze situatia, sa te mentina pe linia de plutire, pana furnizezi toate informatiile, pe care ea sa e prelucreze si apoi sa iti trimita “cavaleria” sa te salveze, iar ea se isterizeaza ori sta prost cu geografia?
astazi, din curiozitate m-am uitat de site-ul servicului 112. am dat si de un slogan blodit, si frumos colorat, prin care ni se asigura: respect si preocupare fata de problemele cetateanului!
apoi: „personalul centrelor de preluare a apelurilor de urgenta 112 este compus din profesionisti care raspund la apelurile de urgenta 24 din 24 de ore. ei sunt instruiti pentru a asista apelantii in cazuri de urgenta si a-i ajuta in cel mai scurt timp posibil.”
„sistemul 112 vizeaza asigurarea protectiei cetatenilor si a unui grad inalt de asistenta indiferent de locul in care se afla acestia”.
astazi, tatal meu si-a inmormantat fratele, departe locul unde copilarise, departe de lacrimile si tanguirea mamei, mult prea batrana, pentru a parcurge sutele de kilometrii ce-i desparte. le-a a ramas doar amintirea, si nostalgia (nostalgie vine de la nostos = intoarcere acasa si algos = durere). si, ca tot am adus aminte de nostalgie. poate ca nu stiati, zilele trecute, s-a stins si marele oleg iankovski, protagonistul filmului “nostalghia” regizat detarkovski. un film ce vorbeste despre nostalgia paradisului pierdut (cel individual, sau, in cheie parabolica, cel al intregii umanitati).
“mi-au placut intotdeauna oamenii care nu se pot adapta la viata in mod pragmatic. in filmele mele – marturisea tarkovski – nu exista eroi. protagonistul nostalghiei este imaginea mea in oglinda. niciodata nu mai facusem un film care sa-mi oglindeasca starea de spirit cu atata violenta si sa imi elibereze lumea interioara cu atata profunzime. am dorit sa zugravesc un om profund instrainat de lume si de el insusi, un om ce nu poate gasi echilibrul intre realitate si armonia idealului spre care se indreapta. nostalgia sa este provocata nu doar de faptul ca traieste departe de tara, ci mai cu seama de aspiratiile sale pentru o existenta deplina.” l-am regasit pe unchiul meu in acesta descriere, si intr-o mica sau mare masura, ma regasesc pe mine insami.
